Pay Our Salaries!LASU Convocation: SSANU Suspends Strike, Issues Salary Deadline

There is unease at the Lagos State University (LASU) following an August 5th deadline issued by the local chapter of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) while announcing the suspension of its three-month old strike.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, the Chairman of the association, Mr Saheed Oseni, said the strike would be suspended until Aug. 30.
He said the decision was reached after the LASU Governing Council Chairman, Mr Bode Augusto, assured that all conflicts would be resolved at its next meeting on Aug 29.
"We are giving the governing council a benefit of the doubt; that is why we gave a time frame to the suspension, since the members would meet on Aug. 29," Oseni said.
He added that the union also put the institutions coming convocation into consideration in deciding to suspend the strike.
"It will be wrong for the university to hold its convocation on Aug.6 in an atmosphere where its members of staff are depressed," he said.
Oseni however warned that there would be trouble if the LASU management failed to pay SSANU members’ two months salaries the authorities withheld during the strike.
"We are giving the authorities till Aug. 5 to pay the outstanding salaries," he declared.
Amongst the union's demands is the reduction in tuition fee, repeal of LASU’s 'no-vacancy-no-promotion' policy, and implementation of the 2012 Universities Miscellaneous Provision Act.
The strike began on May 26.
