Police authorities have arrested 12 officers of
the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in Calabar, Cross River State for
allegedly killing of six detainees.
One of the deceased is Derek Maurice, a 300 level undergraduate of the University of Calabar (UNICAL).
The officers, led by a certain Sgt Anthony Idoko, were accused of killing the six inmates on April 17, 2014 and selling their corpses to the Anatomy Department of UNICAL.
Idoko's
team had allegedly picked up late Derek near his home on April 16, 2014
and take to their office in Diamond Hill, Calabar, before killing him
the following day.
Student Pulse gathered the State Directorate of Public Prosecution recommended that the officers be arrested be prosecuted after investigations to determine their culpability.
A petition by Mrs. Eno Maurice, the mother of later Derek, triggered the investigation that led to their arrest.
Derek's
body and that of 5 other inmates was traced to UNICAL's Anatomy
Department by an investigative panel constituted by the Assistant
Inspector-General of Police, Zone 6 Command, Musa. A. Daura.
On conclusion of investigations, the DPP recommended their prosecution.
