A man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for
raping and killing a 19-year-old student, Elizabeth "Lizzi" Marriott,
whose body he later dumped into a river.
Seth
Mazzaglia, 31, was convicted of raping and killing Marriott, a
University of New Hampshire student the Strafford County Superior Court
in Dover, N.H., on Thursday.
The killing happened on Oct. 9, 2012.
Boston Herald reports that the convict was given a life sentence without parole while the victim's family lamented their loss.
"I
wish that good would triumph over evil, but you are proof beyond any
doubt how untrue that is," the deceased father, Bob Marriott, told
Mazzaglia in court.
Melissa Marriott also had a word for Mazzaglia before his sentence was read.
"I want you to know that I unequivocally hate you," she aid.
"You are a cowardly, despicable person. You stole our smart, vivacious, beautiful daughter from us.
"You
murdered Lizzi, raped her lifeless body and then threw her away because
Lizzi had the self-confidence and the self-esteem to say no to you."
Sex Motive
Late Marriot was a friend of Mazzaglia's girlfriend, Kathryn McDonough.
McDonough
testified against her boyfriend at trial, saying he had asked her to
lure Marriot to their apartment as a sexual offering.
According
to McDonough's testimony, when Marriot refused his love advances,
Mazzaglia strangled her with a rope until she became unconscious.
He then raped her lifeless body.
I Did Not Rape, Kill Her
But Mazzaglia claims he did not rape or kill Marriot.
"I did not rape and murder Elizabeth Marriott," he said.
"However,
I do understand the Marriott family's pain and I did play a part in
covering up her death, a mistake I tried to correct when investigators
came to me and I showed them exactly where I left Lizzi's body.
He however apologised to late Marriot's family.
"My heart goes out to the Marriot family and I am very sorry for their loss."
