Team Ilorin have won the 2014 Airtel
Rising Stars National Championship following their 1-0 defeat of Team
Abuja at the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos on Saturday.
A solitary strike in the ninth minute
from Ayinde Taiye was all that new champions needed to claim the title
for the Ilorin zone.
The game was a clear departure from the
goalless contest between the two teams when they met in the round robin
match played on Wednesday.
In the girls’ final, Port Harcourt defeated Lagos 4-2 via penalties after the match had ended goalless at full time.
The girls from the Garden City had fought
very sternly to defend the title they have now won four times in a row
since inception in 2011.
The finalists in the girls’ category had played a goalless draw on Saturday before deciding the winners through penalties.
The two champions will represent Nigeria at the weeklong Africa Championship to be hosted by Gabon in the last week of August.
The ARS U-17 tournament, a pan-African
initiative of Airtel Africa, is designed to provide support for the
development of football talents across Nigeria . It aims at discovering
talented male and female footballers below 17 years and providing them
with platform to gain football skills and develop into professional
footballers.
